Columbia County basketball teams ready for state playoffs

When the Georgia High School Association basketball playoffs begin Friday, several Columbia County teams will be in action.

Region 3-AAAAAA champion Grovetown will play host to Coffee County (8-18) at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state tournament. The fifth-ranked Lady Warriors (20-7), who won their second consecutive region title Friday with its victory over Heritage, will try to advance to the second round for the year in a row.

Also in girls action, Evans (13-13), a No. 3 seed, will travel to play No. 2 seed Valdosta (11-15). Greenbrier (12-14), a No. 4 seed, will travel to play Region 1 champion Northside-Warner Robins (17-9).

In boys action, Region 3 champion Lakeside will play host to Valdosta (15-11) at 6 p.m. Saturday. The fourth-ranked Panthers are coming off their first region championship, a late comeback victory Friday night over Heritage. Lakeside is 21-4 and has already set a school record for wins in a season.

Greenbrier (8-17), a No. 3 seed, will play at Northside-Warner Robins (13-14) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The winners of the girls games will advance to play in the second round next Wednesday night, while the second round boys contests will be held Thursday, Feb. 23.
