Lakeside moves closer to region title

After a 0-5 start to the season, Lakeside sits one win away from claiming its second region title in school history.

The Panthers defeated Heritage, 28-26, to improve to 3-0 in Region 3-AAAAAA play. Lakeside, which won its only region title in 2009, will travel to rival Evans in a showdown of unbeaten region teams at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

After allowing Heritage to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Panthers bounced back to take a 21-13 lead entering the fourth quarter. Lakeside extended its lead to 15 points and then fended off a Patriots’ rally that featured two touchdowns late in the contest. After Heritage scored to pull within 28-26, the Patriots failed on the two-point try with 1:47 to go.

• Augusta Prep finished its regular season with an 8-1 record after a road win at Westfield School.

The Cavaliers offense got back on track with a 41-23 victory, the seventh time the team has scored 35 or more points this season.

Augusta Prep enters the GISA Class AAA Playoffs as a No. 2 seed. The Cavaliers will play host to Deerfield-Windsor (6-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

• Augusta Christian fell down early to Florence Christian and couldn’t recover, falling 21-7.

The Lions (3-6, 2-3) dropped their fourth game in a row. Florence Christian led 21-0 at intermission and held off a Lions rally. Jackson Wingard scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to pull Augusta Christian within 14, but that would be as close as the Lions would get.

Augusta Christian closes the regular season when it travels to Trinity-Byrnes at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

• Grovetown and Harlem enjoyed a bye. The Warriors will play host to Greenbrier at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the Bulldogs will travel to play Laney at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
