Grovetown expected to even up its season

Grovetown (2-3) vs. Alcovy (4-1)

Congrats go out to Augusta Prep, Augusta Christian and Greenbrier.

The Cavaliers knocked off Gatewood for the first time. The Gators came into the contest simply demolishing their opponents, but they had no answer for Prep’s potent ground attack. For Augusta Christian, it is for the Lions’ three-game winning streak. I have to admit I did not see it coming, but I should have known Keith Walton would find a way to carve out some W’s this year. Finally, for Greenbrier it is for the Pack’s 5-0 start to the season. Surely, they have played a light schedule, but after several years of struggling, the team deserved some success. The way they are playing really makes the battle for Columbia County supremacy in Region 3-AAAAAA a complete toss-up.

Last Week: 5-2

Season Total: 21-7

Here are this week’s picks:

Grovetown (2-3) vs. Alcovy (4-1)

Last Week: Grovetown got by ARC, 14-13. Alcovy edged Forest Park, 7-6

Last Meeting: First meeting between the two schools

Grovetown’s 1-point victory over ARC had a few folks scratching their heads, but I still like this Warriors squad. Alcovy is 4-1, but the four teams they beat have a combined record of 2-17. In contrast, Grovetown’s three losses have come to teams with a combined record of 10-2-1.

Prediction: Grovetown 23, Alcovy 9

Harlem (2-3) vs. Screven County (4-1)

Last Week: Harlem lost to Butler, 26-21. Screven County beat Laney, 31-18

Last Meeting: Screven Co. won last year, 41-0

All-Time: Screven. leads the series 4-0

Harlem lost a heart-breaker last week as Butler rallied with two late scores to top HHS. There is no time to lick their wounds, however, because they play a very good squad this week. Screven County is well-coached and will have a distinct size advantage over the Bulldogs.

Prediction: Screven County 37, Harlem 14

Lakeside (0-4)
at Bradwell Institute (1-2-1)

Last Week: Lakeside lost to Richmond Hill 34-6. Bradwell tied Long Co., 22-22

Last Meeting: First meeting between the two programs

Lakeside has had a rough go of it. They have been outscored 145-36 in their four losses. Keep in mind they have played an extremely difficult schedule. Their four opponents have a combined record of 16-3 on the season. I think the Panthers notch their first win this week.

Prediction: Lakeside 27, Bradwell Institute 13

Augusta Christian (3-2) vs. Hammond (4-1)

Last Week: ACVS beat Oakbrook Prep, 21-12. Hammond topped Cardinal Newman, 54-23

Last Meeting: Hammond won last year 42-0

All-Time: Hammond leads the series 14-3

Augusta Christian has found a way to put together three consecutive wins. They will have a tough time this week, however, as they battle a very good Hammond team. They will need to create a few turnovers and get a huge game from E’mon Reeves to pull this one off.

Prediction: Hammond 38, ACS 14

Augusta Prep (5-0) at Bethlehem Christian Academy (4-3)

Last Week: AP beat Gatewood 41-20. BCA hammered Dominion Christian, 53-0

Last Meeting: Augusta Prep won 42-6 in 2013

All-Time: Augusta Prep leads 3-0

The Cavaliers picked up a huge win last week against a solid team in Gatewood. The bottom line: Bethlehem Christian will have their hands full stopping B.J. Stone, David Bramble and Will Dorn on the ground. The Cavs should go to 6-0.

Prediction: Augusta Prep 45, Bethlehem Christian 19

Idle: Evans (3-2) plays at Alcovy Oct. 7

Idle: Greenbrier (5-0) plays at Lakeside, Oct. 7
