Border Bowl Combine spotlights players

Posted: July 21, 2015 - 11:06pm

The inaugural The Augusta Chronicle/WJBF News Channel 6 Border Bowl Combine was held at Evans High School on Saturday.

Nearly 100 area high school senior football players participated in the combine, which tested individual abilities in the 40, 20-yard shuttle, ball press and the broad jump.

Big winners included Grovetown’s Ben Jean, who recorded the most points earned by a Georgia player in the four events. Jean also posted the top Georgia distance in the broad jump (9-feet, 10.5-inches).

Points were awarded to players based on their performance in each discipline.

Using results from the events and first-hand looks from watching drills immediately following, Border Bowl III head coaches Lemuel Lackey and Midland Valley’s Rick Knight selected six players for their teams for the upcoming All-Star game.

Lackey, the new Evans coach, picked Harlem’s Bailey Postell, Lui Salt (Richmond Academy), Ethan Crawford (Aquinas) and Brennon Holden (Butler) for Team Georgia.

“I think you got a personal touch with the kids’ abilities and their mindsets behind football,” Lackey said. “I think the kids enjoyed it.

‘‘It was a great turnout. I was really impressed with how the kids came out and competed.”
