On the game’s final pitch, the ball got far enough away from the catcher for the winning run to score in Greenbrier’s 6-5 victory against Evans in the Region 2-AAAAA championship game Thursday evening.

“Coach (Jason) Osborn, when they were meeting on the mound, he said, ‘They’re probably going to throw a high fastball – get ready for the passed ball.’ He called it,” Braz Staples said.

“That’s what happened. I just got a good jump and scored.”

Greenbrier trailed 4-0 as both starting pitchers had a lot of trouble in the first inning.

Evans needed only one hit against Adam Sasser – a Kyle Anderson two-RBI double – to score four runs in the first thanks to three walks to start the game. Greenbrier also committed two errors on one play.

But Sasser brought his team back with one swing in the bottom of the first, crushing a Seth Carter pitch for a grand slam to get some bounce in his step as he moved toward first base.

Greenbrier later took the lead in the bottom of the third before Evans answered quickly in the top of the fourth.

It remained tied at 5 as Carter got to the seventh and Connor Hogan stepped in for Sasser in the fifth.

Carter allowed two singles to begin the seventh to force a change. Hunter Dollander then came on in relief as the Wolfpack loaded the bases and had no outs when the winning run scored.

As for Hogan, he didn’t allow a run in three innings of work to give Greenbrier the region title and a No. 1 seed for the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Evans will be the region’s No. 2 seed.

“That was huge,” Osborn said about Hogan. “He looked as good as he’s looked in a while. To hold them where they were was big for us. I’m just tickled to death for these guys. That’s a dang good club over there that’s going to make a good run at state.”
