One step shy of their ultimate prize, the Greenbrier Pee Wee Wolfpack Pop Warner football team’s season came to a close.

Facing the Santa Fe Raiders in the third round of the Pop Warner Division III Southeast Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., the Wolfpack lost 21-7.

“It was a good run,” said Wolfpack coach Tony Carden, whose squad finished 8-3. “It’s the first time a Pop Warner team from this area has gotten that far.”

Having traveled the highway to Florida the past two weeks, the Wolfpack would have played for the championship the day after Thanksgiving in Orlando with a win.

“The team we played was pretty good. They were fundamentally sound, they threw the ball once or twice,” Carden said.

One of those passes helped turn the tables on the Wolfpack. Trailing 8-7, the Wolfpack missed on a fourth-and-goal, turning the ball over on downs. The Raiders then ran a middle screen that popped for a healthy chunk of yardage and they went on to a score for a 14-7 lead.

“That was a momentum changer,” said Carden.
