Lakeside cross country teams do well in Athens

Lakeside's Alyssa Hooker was seventh in the cross country event in Athens.

Lakeside High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams were the county’s top finishers at the 10th Annual NEGA Cross Country Championships at Athens Christian on Saturday.

In a field of 16 in the boys championship division, the Panthers were fifth, while the Lady Panthers finished 11th in a field of 14. Senior Christian Bowles paced the young Panthers, coming in third in 16:38.24. Sophomore Allen Clark (17:22.41) was 14th, sophomore Joe Way (18:00.94) was 26th, sophomore Brooks Lemmon (18:55.49) was 53rd and junior Joseph Stapf (19:21.93) was 72nd.

Greenbrier’s boys finished seventh overall, led by senior Logan Hughes (17:03.44) who was10th. Junior Laquentin Brown (18:11.89) was 32nd and junior Jonathan Vernon (18:43.93) was 47th.

In the boys’ varsity division, Grovetown junior Zach Reformat was the county’s top finisher, coming in 22nd in 19:55.16.

In the championship division, the Lady Panthers were led by sophomore Alyssa Hooker (19:54.38) who finished seventh and freshman Maggie Bembry (23:12.47) who was 50th. The Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack came in 13th overall, led by senior Laura Shillingsburg (23:27.17) in 59th and Kath-erine Markowski (23:47.12) who came in 71st.

In the varsity girls division, Grovetown was 16th led by sophomore Michelle Villanueva (25:00.22) who finished 37th.
