Lakeside's long snapper signed

Posted: July 30, 2014 - 12:10am

For Connor Kubala, getting an offer to play football in college was a snap.

Kubala, the Lakeside High School long snapper, verbally committed to Division I Coastal Carolina University (Conway, S.C.) on Monday after receiving an offer from the Chanticleers.

Long snapping is what he is committing solely to do for the Chanticleers.

“It puts you through college,” said Kubala of his specialty. “You snap a football and do your job, you’ll get some scholarship money and you get to go to college. That’s what my dad told me.”

Kubala had interest from Florida Atlantic and Appalachian State, but Coastal Carolina was always a frontrunner.

“I have relatives who live right down the road,” Kubala said. “Going by there as a younster I was like, ‘how cool would it be to play there, right next to the beach, my grandparents right down the road.’ And Myrtle Beach.”

The Chanticleers’ pedigree didn’t hurt either. They finished 2013 with a 12-3 record, losing in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs to eventual national champion North Dakota State University.

Kubala visited the university in April on Junior Day, made a personal visit in early July and attended specialist camp (punters and snappers) on Sunday. It was after the camp the Chanticleers made an offer.
