Little League District 6 championships begin

The Little League District 6 championships hosted by Martinez Evans Little League got underway Saturday.

The 10-11 age group kicked off play at Crawford Creek Park with the MELL Nationals beating the MELL Americans 8-4 in the first game of a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the state round.

Eight teams particpated in the 9-10 age bracket Saturday in its double-elimination tournament with three MELL teams in the mix. The MELL Americans advanced to face Washington-Wilkes in the winners’ bracket Sunday with a 15-8 win over Oglethorpe County.

Washington-Wilkes advanced with a 14-2 win over the MELL Patriots.

In other action, East Athens beat the MELL Nationals, 6-4, and Elbert County beat Masters City 15-2.

Jackson Boggs pitched a one-hitter and gave up two runs in the 10-11 MELL Nationals’ win and led the team with three hits. Conner Boan got the MELL Americans’ second hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning, a two-run homer that made the final 8-4.

In the 9-10 group, the Mell Americans had 10 hits in its 15-8 win. Reid Akins had two hits including a three-run homer as the Americans broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning.
