The day before his high school graduation, Evans’ Patrick Lawrence took care of his living arrangements for the near future.
Lawrence, who joined the Knights’ squad his junior year, signed to play basketball for Division II Erskine College (Due West, S.C.) on May 23.
Still looking for a school after the season ended, Lawrence and Erskine connected at the end of March.
“My mentor Will Avery set up a showcase and they saw me there,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence will join the Flying Fleet who went 15-12 in their 2013-14 campaign while competing in the Conference Carolinas.
Lawrence made his mark in his time with Evans as they advanced to the state tournament each year. He almost doubled his scoring average from his junior to senior season. He led the Knights in scoring and rebounding at 14.8 points- and 8.6 rebounds-per-game, respectively as a senior. For his efforts he was named First Team All-Region 2-AAAAA and First Team All-County.
Evans head coach Kevin Kenny wished he could have had him for more than two years.
“First off he’s a quality kid,” said Kenny. “Playing-wise, for two years he did a lot for us, this year especially. He worked on his game all summer between his junior and senior year with Will (Avery). That helped tremendously.”
Lawrence, who anticipates playing at either of the guard positions, liked what he saw when he visited Erskine in April.
“I loved Erskine, they have good people there,” he said.
