When Evans resident Andy Stewart hits the Modoc (S.C.) raceway on Saturday, May 31, he will be honoring a friend and local legend.
Stewart, who drives on short and dirt tracks every weekend from March to November, will forgo his usual No. 75 and will run with No. 45, paying tribute to Lee Paschal, for whom he used to drive.
Paschal, who passed away on May 1, was a 2008 inductee into the Augusta International Raceway Hall of Fame and was known for cars bearing the No. 45.
Stewart was in the Paschal fold for 15-16 years, but even when he wasn’t, he still drove with Paschal in mind.
“I’ve always run Paschal’s Wood Products on the side of my car.” Stewart said. “I would still drive his cars if we went to a race somewhere and he was there. He didn’t have a regular driver and I would drive it.”
The Modoc race won’t be a one-time occurrence.
“I’m going to run it some at some of the races,” Stewart said. “Me and him were real good friends. We won many a race together.”
