Lakeside High School’s Steve Hibbitts and South Aiken’s Jeremy West have been named head coaches for Border Bowl II.
The postseason all-star game features the area’s best senior high school football players pitted against each other in a Georgia vs. South Carolina showdown. Hibbitts will lead Georgia while West will coach the South Carolina squad. Both Hibbitts and West were assistants on the first Border Bowl staffs.
The game will be played Saturday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. at Laney’s football stadium.
“I had fun just watching some of the best players in the area just get after it,” Hibbitts said. “To be on the sideline and watch 22 of the best athletes in the area go at it, it’s almost like watching a college game.”
Hibbitts was head coach at Westside for four seasons before he took the Lakeside job in late April. He led the Patriots to the Class AA state playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
Hibbitts takes the place of Jarrett Troxler. Troxler coached Georgia as the then-head coach of Lakeside, where he went 21-22 in four seasons and reached the state playoffs three times. He has since moved on to Greenbrier.
At the inaugural Border Bowl, Georgia beat South Carolina 24-10. The Georgia defense dominated the game, with Lakeside’s Kendall White recovering two fumbles and scoring a defensive touchdown.
The game is put on by WJBF News Channel 6 and The Augusta Chronicle, and proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta.
