The Georgia High School Class AAAAA boys track championships start Thursday and run through Saturday in Jefferson, Ga.
County track and field athletes competed in sectionals at Loganville High School on April 26, with the top eight in each event qualifying for the state meet.
Grovetown High School qualified for the most events with six. Darius Watkins, the 2013 GHSA Class AAAAA 200-meter state champion, qualified with wins in the 100 (10.83), the 200 (21.88) and joined Linward Jackson, Shiyear Woodbury and Ben Jean in qualifying for the 4x100 relay with an eighth-place finish (43.46). Jean was second in the 400 (49.61), Rudy Valentine was seventh in the long jump
(21-01.75) and Woodbury was eighth in the 300 hurdles.
Lakeside’s Christian Bowles was the only other multiple qualifier, finishing first in 3,200 (9:40.53) and second in the 1,600 (4:26.00). Allen Clark joined his teammate Bowles in the 3,200 with a sixth-place finish (10:10.77).
Multiple qualifiers for the same event included Lakeside’s Bryce Ivery who was sixth in the 800 (2:00.99) followed in seventh by Evans’ Justin Weegar (2:01.28) and Anthony Brooks in the eighth spot (2:01.82).
Greenbrier’s Isaac Hammonds joined Jean in the 400 with a fifth-place finish (50.33) while Lakeside’s Jonathan Edwards qualified for the 200 with a seventh-place showing (22.77).
