Just like the regular season and region tournament, the Lakeside High School tennis teams dominated their opponents Tuesday in the first round of the 2014 Georgia High School Association State Tennis Tournament.

Both Lakeside teams entered play with 17-0 records and made short work of their Region 4 foe Northgate, winning 5-0 in a little over an hour at the Petersburg Racquet Club.

For the girls, it was the start of their defense of their 2013 Class AAAAA state title.

“We came out playing to win,” said Lakeside No. 3 singles Anneliese Leahy, who finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the Vikings’ Ally Chenowith. “It seems like everybody is playing well, they’re going at their own pace and being efficient.”

Leahy noted that the Lady Panthers were building up to a potential quarterfinal match against Starr’s Mill, the team they defeated in the 2013 championship match.

Before the match, head coach Donnie Burch talked to the team about focusing on what was directly in front of them and not to take Northgate for granted.

“It’s challenging to not look ahead,” said Burch, who said he had respect for Northgate which plays in the same region as Starr’s Mill. “This is a 100 percent confidence booster the way we’re playing today.”

Lakeside girls No. 1 singles Kayla Hergott defeated Danielle Rankin, 6-1, 6-1 and No. 2 singles Taylor Richards beat Hayley Hasberger, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Sara Hess and Caitlin Pintavorn were 6-3, 6-3 winners over Sarah Edmonds and Sarah Guilot while Brittany McLeod and Katie Burton beat Lauren Handley and Sydney Wells, 7-6, 6-1.

The Lakeside boys advanced to the quarterfinals a year ago and are looking to get further this year.

“Last year we did pretty well and lost,” said sophomore No. 1 boys singles Sam Dromsky. “With a year of experience we feel like we can go far.”

Dromsky won his match 6-0, 6-0 over Larry Sloan, No. 2 singles Drew Harris beat Cole Chenowith 6-1, 6-4 and Thomas Huff dispatched Nate Taylor, 6-0, 6-0.

In boys doubles, Elliot Bull and Justin Horne were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Daniel Blocker and Alex Waldren while Andrew Bowles and Will Barksdale beat Andrew Kelley and Payton Thomas, 6-1, 6-2.
