Last summer, the Martinez Evans 15-16 Senior League All-Star team made a run through the district, state and Southeast Regional tournaments on its way to the 2013 Senior League World Series.
The squad fell just sort of a World Series title in Bangor, Maine, losing 5-4 to Panama in the semifinals.
To get to the 2014 World Series, the All-Stars are hoping to have a slightly different path. In 2013 they won district at Kelley Park, won the state title in Warner Robins, Ga. before advancing to the World Series with a region win in DeBary, Fla.
Already they have been assured of playing host to the district and state tournaments and are awaiting news of their bid to play host to the 2014 Southeast Regional.
“If we get the regional, those boys will be able to play all summer and never leave Augusta,” said Carroll Proctor, MELL president.
The district tournament begins June 30 at Kelley Park while the state tournament starts July 12 at a county high school yet to determined. If awarded the region tournament, a high school would be the venue, according to Woodie Melton, Mell safety officer.
The way that MELL structured their bid, if they get to play host, they would just have to advance past the district round. They would not have to win the state round to play in the regional as host as there is an open spot in the region because Alabama won’t field a team. They could potentially earn the right to host but still have to make it through the state competition to advance.
MELL’s senior team isn’t the only one coming off a good 2013 summer. The 10-11 year-old team was the Georgia State champions while the 11-12 team and the junior league team were District 6 champions.
There are still spots open on teams in the junior and senior leagues. The last tryout is Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Kelley Park.
