Another year is in the books for the girls and boys basketball players of Region 2A-AAAAA and the subregion teams, as voted on by the coaches, reflect the talent level throughout.

By all accounts it was a good season. Greenbrier High School, Grovetown and Evans advanced to the state tournament on the girls side while the Evans and Lakeside boys played in the state’s postseason.

The future of girls basketball in the county looks promising. Of the 17 girls listed below, just four are seniors while the boys lists are junior-driven as well.

Player of the Year: Sam Powell: Lakeside

The Panthers forward helped the Panthers to a 19-7 record and a trip to the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA State boys basketball tournament. Equally adept at driving to the basket or shooting from the outside, Powell averaged 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds-per-game.

“Sam is very deserving of the Subregion Player of the Year honor,” said Panthers’ coach Jody Hilley. “He has been the most consistent player in our subregion over the past two years and he eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his varsity career during the region tournament this year. As good of a player as Sam is, he’s an even better person.”

“Mallory is the backbone of our team,” said Lady Wolfpack coach Stefanie Basinger. “We are fortunate to have many great players with an abundance of athleticism and talent, but Mallory is the center of it all and is what makes us go.
