County's football talent signs with several colleges

Posted: February 9, 2014 - 1:01am  |  Updated: February 9, 2014 - 1:59am

National Signing Day was this past Wednesday and several Columbia County Players signed football scholarships. The talent and athleticism in the county continues to improve and another busy signing day is proof. While next year looks to be a huge year for recruiting in the area, with Rashad Roundtree, Stephen Houzah, B.J. Raymond (all of Lakeside), Jamal Richard (Greenbrier), and Matlin Marshall (Evans) leading the way, this year’s group was solid. Here is a look at the players who signed on Wednesday.

K’Lon Lovett (DB) Savannah State

Lovett had 4-5 offers, including a last minute offer from The Citadel, but he said his visit to Savannah State sealed the deal for him.

David Mims (DB) Georgia Military (JUCO)

I will not be surprised at all if Mims is playing in the SEC or ACC in a few years. Missouri really came on strong late, but he will go to one of the premiere junior college programs in the country to hone his skills. He has the size and tools to be a major D-I recruit in two years.

Kendall White (DL) Paine

White has been a beast for LHS for the last three years. He will stay close to home at Paine. The program is in its infancy, but they are stockpiling athletes, and White should be a nice pick up for them.

Thomas Banks (RB) Western Carolina

I would have loved to see how Banks’ recruitment went if he had not been hurt during most of his senior season. He still had a stellar career for Augusta Christian, and much like his cousins (Lee and William) at Georgia Southern, if given a chance to run the ball I am sure the Catamounts won’t be disappointed.

Leonard Miller (DL) Savannah State

Miller’s is an interesting story. He was a basketball prospect during his days at Harlem. He attended Fork Union Military Academy last season and while there he was persuaded to play football. Well, now he is headed to Savannah St. to play defensive line for the Tigers, and basketball will just be a hobby.

Each year the smaller football programs around the country will still be working to sign players after signing day. And, there are several players in the county that will likely sign scholarships or accept preferred walk-on offers in the next few weeks. Here is a look at a few players that will likely sign after signing day.

Matt Chiera (Augusta Christian) Kicker - Chiera will most likely sign with Limestone University

Jonathan Edwards (Lakeside) WR/RB - Edwards actually had several offers, but has not decided which to accept. He seems to be leaning to Kennesaw State at this time. They will be getting a steal.

Had Edwards not played his entire senior season with a knee injury, they may not have even had a chance to get him.

Daniel Cotty (Lakeside) LB - Cotty will be signing with Kennesaw St. as well. It may be a preffered walk-on, but my guess is it will eventually turn into a scholarship. This kid is physical and has terrific size for his position.

Justin Jackson (Evans) LB - Lenoir Rhyne

Jackson was a solid, steady player for Evans and he is close to an offer from Lenoir Rhyne.

Jaocinto Grimes (Evans) WR - Reinhardt University

Reinhardt is a new program in Georgia and Grimes could go there and flourish. It is a private school with great academics, so he will end up with a great education if he chooses to make the move to Waleska, Ga.
