There are several All-Area football teams that annually recognize area players.
The most exclusive team is the WJBF All-CSRA team. Unlike most all-area squads that feature first team, second team and honorable mentions, the WJBF team is simply one player for each position. That’s it.
Each year there are many terrific players who do not make the WJBF team. That is why when a player is selected for the squad it is such a big honor.
On Wednesday night, WJBF held its All-CSRA Awards Banquet at the Marriott in downtown Augusta. To make the night even more special, a portion of the program was televised live in prime time from 8-9 p.m. on WJBF-TV 6 (ABC).
The Carolina Panthers are among the sponsors of the event, and the play-by-play voice of the Panthers, Mick Mixon, was on hand to help emcee the festivities.
Each player named to the team receives a “championship” style All-CSRA Ring from Jostens.
Congratulations go out to Lakeside’s Stephen Houzah and Rashad Roundtree, who both were selected for the team. And the best part, they are both only juniors.
Houzah, who plays wide receiver and safety was honored as the area’s top return man.
This season, he returned four kickoffs for scores. He also had a 100-yard interception return for a TD in a win over Greenbrier.
Roundtree was named as an All-CSRA defensive back.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety made the job easy on the selection committee after a stellar campaign that saw him earn region defensive player of the year honors and a first-team All-State nod.
Another Columbia County player was honored during the banquet. Greenbrier defensive end Malcolm Thomas was awarded the Augusta Pain Center Hit of the Year. It was the second consecutive year that the top hit of the season went to a Columbia County player. Last season, Evans defensive back Jabari Nelson took home the award.
