Girls hoops growing stronger in Columbia County

Posted: January 29, 2014 - 12:07am

There is a lot of talk around the area about the improvement in girls basketball in Columbia County in recent years. What used to be automatic losses against opponents from Richmond County are now hard-fought games, with Columbia County teams winning as many as they lose. This year in particular, Evans, Greenbrier and Grovetown have shown that they are capable of beating just about anyone on a given night. Summer basketball programs such as the Georgia Sting deserve a lot of credit. We also have a tremendous group of coaches in the county now. And, finally, we have some talented young players. So, here is a look at players who put Columbia County girls hoops on the map.

Here are this year’s statistical leaders among our five public schools:

Scoring

Jasmine Stone
(Evans, Sr.) 23.1

Jennifer McMahon (Greenbrier, Jr.) 17.6

Morgan Taylor (Greenbrier, Jr.) 14.3

Destiny Marshall (Greenbrier, Fr.) 14.1

Leah Ferguson (Grovetown, Jr.) 13.3

Olivia Fitzgerald
(Harlem, Sr.) 11.0

Alayah Canteen (Grovetown, Sr.) 10.8

Rebounds

Madison Williamson (Harlem, Soph.) 13.1

Kwajelin Farrar (Grovetown,
Soph.) 12.1 (in 14 games)

Naomi Hughes (Grovetown, Soph.) 9.4

Morgan Taylor (Greenbrier, Jr.) 9.3

Elyssa Melton
(Evans, Jr.) 8.5

Leah Ferguson (Grovetown, Jr.) 8.0

Assists

Mallory Myers (Greenbrier, Jr.) 8.3

Elyssa Melton
(Evans, Jr.) 3.9

Steals

Mallory Myers (Greenbrier, Jr.) 4.3

Elyssa Melton
(Evans, Jr.) 3.8

Alayah Canteen (Grovetown, Sr.) 2.7

Jaylan Jones
(Lakeside, Soph.) 2.7

Clarissa Hopkins (Lakeside, Jr.) 2.6

And, in case you did not notice, of all the girls among the county’s statistical leaders, only three are seniors. That means the future seems pretty bright.

I am especially excited about Greenbrier freshman Destiny Marshall. She is definitely a player to keep an eye for the next few years.
