The Lakeside High School Panthers basketball teams began their participation in Greenbrier’s two-day Battle of the Regions on the losing track Friday.

The Lady Panthers trailed from the onset, falling to the Richmond Academy Lady Musketeers 59-25 before the Panthers lost to the Musketeers, 49-36.

The Panthers’ loss was their second consecutive after beginning the season with four wins.

They came out aggressive in the game’s opening moments and took a 5-0 lead, building it to 10-3 following a Luke Harmon 3-pointer.

The Musketeers (4-3) kept fighting back and tied the game at 10 at the start of the second quarter and led 18-17 with 3:42 left in the half. Two Jake Gilbert buckets gave the Panthers a 21-18 lead at the break.

Halfway through the third quarter, a Harmon driving reverse layup gave the Panthers a 25-20 advantage, but the Musketeers responded by closing the quarter on a 15-2 run to take control of the game.

Sam Powell led the Panthers with 12 points while Gilbert finished with 10.

For the Musketeers, Henry Brown had a game-high 16 points, Frank Roberts finished with 12 and Tony Daggett chipped in with 11.

In Saturday’s finale, the Panthers (5-2) rebounded, beating Burke County 62-55.

The Lady Panthers (2-5) could muster just seven first-half points while being shutout in the second quarter as the Lady Musketeers (7-0) rolled to victory.

“We’ve just got to execute,” said Lady Panthers’ head coach Drew Shelton. “I told them after the game, you lose by a score like we did today and you think there aren’t any bright spots, but when we executed, we did well.”

In the second half, Clarissa Hopkins drilled a trio of 3-pointers to lead the Lady Panthers with nine points while Eliza Brownfield added eight points. Makaya Tanksley and Jasmine Robinson led the Lady Musketeers with 15 points apiece.

Against Burke County Saturday, the Lady Panthers (2-5) lost, 51-31.
