While just a week has gone by in the high school wrestling season, the Grovetown High School Warriors are serving notice that they will be a team to be reckoned with.

After going 5-2 the opening weekend, the Warriors improved to 8-2, taking home the trophy at the Columbia County Wrestling Championships at Greenbrier High School Tuesday.

The Warriors rolled Evans 60-18 to start the night, beat Lakeside 66-18 then finished off Greenbrier 48-30.

“To have us come out here and make a statement like this is a testament to the hard work the wrestlers have put in and the work that the coaching staff has put in,” said Nathan White, the Warriors’ first-year community coach, who works alongside first-year coach Jeremy Davis. “As a group it was rewarding. It’s a good first step in the right direction.”

One of the keys to their success has been filling every weight class.

“Coach Davis did an awesome job of getting in the school and getting people to come out for the team,” White said.

The Warriors received three forfeits from empty weight classes in the ultimate match against Greenbrier that would decide the champion, but the match turned on one bout.

Trailing Greenbrier 24-12, the Warriors’ 152-pounder Chris Pyle trailed the Wolfpack’s Andre Foster 8-5 in the first period. With Foster riding him, Pyle quickly turned the tables and pinned Foster at 1:54, bringing the Warriors within 24-18. Two forfeits and four pins out of the five remaining matches gave Grovetown the 48-30 win.

The Wolfpack finished the night 2-1, Evans was 1-2 and Lakeside was 0-3.

Greenbrier first-year coach Chris McDaniel thought Foster did a great job wrestling up from his usual 145 pounds.

“The kid had a lot of weight on him, so he really put up a good fight,” McDaniel said of Foster. “I knew, win or lose, as soon as that match started I was going to be proud of him when he stepped off the mat,” McDaniel said.

In other matches, Greenbrier bested Lakeside 54-12 and Evans 51-24. Evans topped Lakeside 57-18.

Grovetown earned a forfeit at 106 pounds, then Greenbrier responded as 113-pounder Sam Torres recorded a pin in just 11 seconds to tie the score. The Wolfpack’s Wes Taylor earned a 9-8 decision over Daegan Lente at 120 pounds before Grovetown’s Ashar Evans (126) got a pin to give the Warriors a 12-9 lead.

The Wolfpack surged as Caleb Diprete (132) earned a major decision, Jacob Welsh (138) got a pin and Alexander Torres (145) earned a 17-6 decision, bringing the lead to 24-12.

After the Pyle-Foster match, the Warriors got a forfeit at 160 pounds and Robert Maldonado (170) scored a 21-second pin. Greenbrier’s Kolby Schaible (182) tied the score at 30 with a 26-second pin of his own.

The Warriors’ Xavier Merrill (195) got a 51-second pin and they received a forfeit at 220 pounds. In the 285-pound weight class, Greenbrier’s George Conrad was a tenth of a second away from pinning the Warriors’ Charles Lindemuth before the first period ended. Trailing 7-1, Lindemuth came out strong and pinned Conrad.

Tuesday’s competition was a warmup of sorts for the Wolfpack, who will play host to the Region 2-AAAAA duals on January 3-4, 2014. While they’ll face the county throughout the regular season, the Wolfpack will be preparing for a possible rematch at the region tournament.

“Hopefully, if we match up against Grovetown in the region tournament, we’re ready to take them,” said McDaniel.
