End of season will be tough for Bulldogs

Posted: October 23, 2013 - 12:04am  |  Updated: October 23, 2013 - 1:16am

Last Week: 4-1

Season Total: 37-10 (78.7 percent)

Evans, Harlem, Lakeside and Augusta Prep all posted victories over the weekend.

For Harlem it was win number six. The Bulldogs will have their hands full in their final two regular-season games, but they have a chance at a little more history, in what has already been an exciting season. Harlem has not had seven or more wins in a season since 1981. I am rooting for that to change this season.

Lakeside showed off it’s incredible team speed in a blowout win over Greenbrier.

And, with Houston County knocking off Warner Robins, the Panthers control their own destiny to finish No. 2 in the Region and host a playoff game. They have tough games left with Jones County, Evans, and Warner Robins, but if they play well, they could win all three.

Augusta Prep continued to churn out the rushing yards. Out rushing Anderson 423 yards to 45, in a 35-25 win, the victory locked up the Eastern League title for the Cavaliers.

Evans (4-3, 2-2) vs. Houston County (4-3, 2-2)

Last Week: Evans beat Grovetown 37-17 / Houston County topped Warner Robins 27-23

Last Meeting: Houston County won 45-14 last year

The Knights are much improved from a year ago, but Houston is even more improved. It will take a supreme effort and mistake-free football if Evans plans to get the win. The Knights are fighting for their playoff lives, so they should come ready to play, and perhaps Houston County will have a let down after an emotional win over Warner Robins. I still have to lean with Houston County

Greenbrier (0-7, 0-4) vs. No. 1 Northside Warner Robins (7-0, 4-0)

Last Week: Greenbrier lost to Lakeside 56-0 / NS Warner Robins beat Jones County 49-21

Last Meeting: NS Warner Robins won last year 35-0

Greenbrier’s long season continues this week as they host the No. 1 Ranked Team in Class AAAAA. Northside beat Lakeside by 28 points and Lakeside just shutout Greenbrier by 56 points. You get the picture. This will likely be all Northside.

NS Warner Robins 51 Greenbrier 7

Grovetown (1-6, 0-4) at Warner Robins (6-1, 3-1)

Last Week: Grovetown lost to Evans 37-17 / Warner Robins lost to Houston County 27-23

Last Meeting: Warner Robins won 35-14 last year

Grovetown dropped their fifth straight game over the weekend. This week, their tough schedule continues, as they face Warner Robins coming off a loss. Grovetown is extremely young. Hopefully those kids will get a lot out of the early playing time and experience they are getting.

Warner Robins 38 Grovetown 14

Harlem (6-2, 2-2) vs. Dublin (5-2, 3-0)

Last Week: Harlem got past Josey 7-6 / Dublin was idle

Last Meeting: Dublin won 20-14 last season

The Bulldogs are enjoying a great year, but they face a big step up in competition this week. Dublin had a down year last season, but the perennial power appears to have righted the ship.

Augusta Christian (2-6, 2-5) at Heathwood Hall (2-6, 2-5)

Last Week: ACS lost to Hammond 49-26 / Heathwood Hall lost to Wilson Hall 28-7

Last Meeting: Augusta Christian won 26-12 last year

The Lions continue to put up good battles, but they continue to suffer losses.

I’m afraid that trend may continue this week. ACS is capable of beating Heathwood Hall, but they need to generate some turnovers or get a big
special teams play.
