Early-season picks are not up to standard

This week's games

Posted: September 4, 2013 - 12:06am  |  Updated: September 4, 2013 - 1:25am

Last Week: 3-2

Season total: 3-3

I am not off to a great start this season picking games. Last year, I finished the season 54-12 (81.8 percent), which put me at 80.9 percent over the last eight years. So, 50 percent is not where I expect to be. Lakeside led Statesboro through three quarters before losing and Augusta Christian played without its top player, so I can’t be to disappointed. Evans and Harlem each posted impressive victories last week. The two teams combined to win only five games in 2012. That number should certainly be higher this season.

This week’s games

Evans - Idle (Plays at Elbert County Sept. 13)

Greenbrier (0-1) vs. N. Augusta (2-0)

Last Week: Greenbrier was off / North Augusta crushed Midland Valley 43-6

Last Meeting: North Augusta topped Greenbrier last year 35-7

It is not a good sign for Greenbrier that Westside hammered Cross Creek 55-7. The same Cross Creek team that got past the Pack 25-14. They will have their hands full with North Augusta’s high-powered offense led by QB Trib Reece.

North Augusta 48, Greenbrier 10

Grovetown (0-1) vs. Swainsboro (0-1)

Last Week: Grovetown lost to Washington Co. 56-7 / Swainsboro was idle.

Last Meeting: Swainsboro snuck past Grovetown 20-17 last year

Swainsboro comes in off a bye week and is facing a Grovetown team with revenge on their mind. However, I am not sure if the Warriors have the horses to take this one.

Swainsboro 19, Grovetown 17

Harlem (1-0) vs. Oglethorpe (0-1)

Last Week: Harlem beat GMC 28-7 / Oglethorpe lost to Johnson-Gainesville 34-8

Last Meeting: Oglethorpe won last year’s match up 35-13

All-Time: Oglethorpe leads the series 7-5-1

I am going to stick with the ’Dogs. I was impressed with some of their young talent late last year in a game versus Josey and they played well last week.

Harlem 27, Oglethorpe 23

Lakeside (0-1) vs. Thomson (0-0)

Last Week: LHS lost to Statesboro 25-15 / Thomson was idle

Last Meeting: Thomson won last year 51-29

All-Time: The Bulldogs lead the series 12-1

Thomson was losing 21-0 early in the second quarter two weeks ago to Burke County before lightning canceled the game. Lakeside does not have a Donquell Green on their team, but they do have some great athleticism.

Lakeside 29, Thomson 27

Augusta Christian (0-1) at Ben Lippen (0-1)

Last Week: ACS lost to Wilson Hall 33-13 / Ben Lippen fell to Porter Gaud 41-0

Last Meeting: Augusta Christian won last year 45-28

All-Time: Lions lead the series 9-2

Last week, the Lions showed the effects of losing several four-year starters to graduation. They also were without standout RB Thomas Banks. This week they notch their first victory of 2013

Augusta Christian 31, Ben Lippen 23

Augusta Prep (1-0) vs. Curtis Baptist (1-1)

Last Week: AP was idle / Curtis beat Covenant Christian 42-0

Last Meeting: The Cavaliers beat Curtis last season 31-12

Augusta Prep seems to have a nice 1-2 punch in QB Nate Pylant and RB Nolan Brandon. I think they get to 2-0.

Augusta Prep 32, Curtis 19
