The excitement was palpable before the start of Augusta Christian’s football practice Wednesday.

It was the first day of full contact for the Lions, who enter the season as the defending South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA champions.

“The kids are bouncing off the walls, so I’m trying to reel them in,” said Lions head coach Keith Walton.

Walton may have tried to reel them in, but after practicing fundamentals, the coaching staff was just as enthusiastic about the one-on-one blocking and tackling drill where a runner tried to get past three levels of would-be tacklers.

The Lions begin defense of their crown on Friday, August 30 at home facing Wilson Hall.
