The Amateur Athletic Union team Velocity Striders continue to make their mark in the scholastic track world.
The group, comprised mainly of Columbia County athletes, traveled to Greensboro, N.C., for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, June 14 and 15, competing against some of the top talent in the nation.
Greenbrier High School’s Warren Coombs had the top individual finish, taking fifth in the boys 200-meter dash in the emerging elite category with a time of 22.30. Darius Watkins, the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA 200-meter state champion from Grovetown, was sixth in the boys 200 (21.78).
Both the boys and girls shone in the relays.
The relay team of Coombs, Dontae Weaver, Elias Madrid and Jeremy Harden was third in the 4x100 in 41.89 and fourth in the 4x200 in 1:26.29.
In the girls 4x100 emerging elite, Briana Harden, Kayla Tyson, Kaitlin Lucius and Jewell Smith came in fourth at 48.64.
