Runners from the Velocity Striders AAU team competed at the Golden South Classic, an international, elite track and field meet for high school students in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday.
Runners who met qualifying standards competed in the classic division, and others competed in the prep division.
In the classic division, the boys 4x100 meter relay team – Greenbrier’s Warren Coombs, Dontae Weaver, Elias Madris and Jeremy Harden – showed their speed, finishing second in 40.73. They also finished eighth in the 4x400 relay (3:30.36).
Coombs also took 14th in the 400 (49.29).
Grovetown’s Darius Watkins took fourth in the 100 (10.67). The 2013
Class AAAAA state champion in the 200, Watkins finished sixth in the 200 (21.58) followed by Harden in seventh (21.60) and Evans’ Xarious Henderson in eighth (21.98).
In the prep division, Coombs won the 100 in 10.91 and the 200 in 21.82; Augusta Prep’s John Earwood was 10th in the mile run (4:55.26) and second in the two-mile run (10:29.95) and Greenbrier’s Corey Hedgespeth was fifth in the 300 hurdles (42.44).
The girls 4x100 team of Greenbrier’s Jewell Smith, Kaitlin Lucius, Nouri Moore and Kayla Tyson finished eighth in 48.09.
Lakeside’s Lara Way was 10th in the one-mile (6:03.36) in the classic division and first in the two-mile (12:30.21) in the prep division.
Also in the prep division, Smith was 15th in the 400 (1:01.85).
