Going into Monday night’s game against a tough Wilson Hall team, the Augusta Christian Lions knew they would have to take advantage of any opportunites that came their way.

The Lions took advantage of some, but stranded 10 baserunners as the Barons took away the 5-2 win.

Barons (12-1) pitcher Gordan Owens was dominant in the three innings he pitched, striking out six, mainly with offspeed pitches.

The Lions had a chance to get to him in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out. A strikeout and a tapper to the mound killed that rally, however.

“We did have some chances,” said Lions head coach Tom Abdo. “We competed against a good team.”

Trailing 5-0, the Lions got to reliever William Kinney for two runs in the fifth. A Kobie Brinson walk, a Thomas Banks single and a one-out walk to Harrison Vintson loaded the bases. Pitcher Turner Spratling drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch for the second time. Andrew Gardner singled home a run to keep the bases loaded, but a pop-up and grounder ended the Lions inning.

Gardner accounted for half of the Lions four hits along with the RBI.

The Barons got to Spratling for two runs in the second with two sacrifice flies, added two more runs in the third and one in the fourth.

For the night, Spratling worked a complete game, allowing the five runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

After starting the season 7-1, the Lions lost starting catcher Matt Herzwurm, one of their three seniors to an injured foot, and have lost four games in a row. Abdo is still keeping a positive outlook.

“I tell our guys every day, as long as we work hard, give total effort with a great attitude, it’s a win,” he said.
