High school hoops fans will be able to watch as much basketball as they want Saturday.
Boys and girls teams from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina will crowd the gyms at Evans Middle and Evans High schools, as well as those at Greenbrier and Lakeside High schools for the Fourth Annual Ga-Lina Hoops Preview.
The regular season opens locally Tuesday.
“It’s just an all-day basketball thing,” said Evans boys basketball coach Kevin Kenny, who runs the event along with former Duke and NBA player Will Avery and Sam Ward through the Ga-Lina Foundation. “Everybody’s allowed one scrimmage so we decided a few years back to get a big old thing for the Augusta area.”
All Columbia County schools, with the exception of Augusta Christian, will participate.
Beginning at 10 a.m., Evans High School will feature boys scrimmages, played like games, with a new matchup every hour and a half. The 8:30 p.m. finale pits 2012 GHSA Class AA state champion Laney against Keenan, South Carolina’s 2011 Class AA state champion.
Evans Middle School will have girls scrimmages while Greenbrier and Lakeside will alternate between boys and girls.
Kenny said that as in the past, he expects the day to be well-attended by men’s and women’s Division I and Division II coaches.
“Collectively there are some great teams and individually there are some great players coming,” said Kenny.
The cost to attend a single site is $5 and a hopper pass, granting unlimited access to all venues, costs $8.
