When the 2012 Region 2-AAAAA Region Tournament begins play Saturday, Greenbrier will enter as the team to beat

The Lady Wolfpack (20-6, 6-0 region) beat Evans 2-1, Sept. 25, clinching the top spot in subregion 2A. They open play at home Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at 1 p.m., facing the No. 4 team from the other side of the region, Warner Robins (1-16, 0-4).

“The big thing today is we clinched home field,” said Greenbrier head coach Garrett Black after the final win at Evans. “That’s important to us, but in the big picture we realize Evans is dangerous.”

Also on the table for the Lady Wolfpack is the 500th win for Black and the program. A win in the first game against Warner Robins would hit the milestone and accompany Black’s 15 region titles in 16 years, including a state championship in 2004.

The only two Evans losses in the region came from Greenbrier and the Lady Knights (16-8-1, 4-2) will play host to Northside Warner Robins (4-13-1, 0-4) in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

With a win Saturday, Greenbrier would host the tournament through its conclusion, with four games slated Wednesday and the finals on Thursday.

“I’m so happy that region is at our field because I’m most familiar with it and I play better at our field,” said Greenbrier’s lone senior Taylor Thompson.

It was no surprise that Greenbrier and Evans played two close games in the regular season. Both are led by outstanding pitching, are solid defensively and are strong up and down the lineup.

The Lady Wolfpack is led by pitchers Kirsten Titus (14-4) and Julie Underwood (6-2) while Evans relies on the arms of Lexi Dodgen and Natalie Johnson.

Grovetown (10-13, 1-5) and Lakeside (2-14-1, 1-5) have to hit the road. The Lady Panthers travel to top seed Houston County (16-9-1, 6-0) for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday and the Lady Warriors face Jones County (12-13-1, 4-2) in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
