Augusta Prep head coach Rich Bland wanted his volleyball team to play some competitive teams early to help them get ready for area play.

He got that and more when his Lady Cavaliers got taken down 3-0 by Fox Creek Wednesday night.

“Fox Creek is a good team, very similar to South Aiken in that they have a quick offense and they’re coached well,” said Bland.

The Lady Cavaliers (3-2) were coming off two area wins, but started slow in games and couldn’t contain the Lady Predators (3-0) in the end.

In game three, already down two games, it appeared the Lady Cavaliers would force further action as they led 23-20. Fox Creek reeled off the next five points, however, winning 25-23 and ending the match.

Lady Predators head coach Clay Bryant was happy his team prevailed in the final game when Augusta Prep played its best.

“I thought Prep played real good defense in that last game,” said Bryant. “I was proud of our girls to win rallies when Prep played good defense.”

Fox Creek beat the Lady Cavaliers by a 25-17 margin in the first two games.

The Lady Predators jumped out to quick leads in the first two games, forcing the Lady Cavaliers to fight from behind from the get-go.

“In practice it was a little flat yesterday, so that carried over, kind of a hangover from the three-day weekend,” Bland said.

In game one, the Lady Cavaliers stayed in the game by winning eight points during Hannah Masiongale’s serves, but were outdone as the Lady Predators won 11 points on serves by Morgan Williams.

The Lady Cavaliers trailed 18-17 before the Lady Predators reeled off seven consecutive points for the win.

The Lady Predators jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game and the Lady Cavaliers would never recover.

“We held our focus very well in the first two games,” Bryant said.

With Fox Creek up 18-16 in game three, the two teams engaged in a long rally before the Lady Predators eventually won the point.

The Lady Cavaliers forged ahead 23-20 following kills by Brooke Stevens and Margaret Cavanaugh. After Williams recorded a kill to get the serve back, she served out the match with the last three points coming on a Kaley Turner kill, a service ace and a Stephanie Bloedel kill.

“The ending was good,” said Bland. “We were up 23-20 and just couldn’t close it out. The thing I was proud about was that they never gave up.”
