Harlem head coach Jimmie Lewis is hoping he gets to use a razor after the Bulldogs’ season-opener against Georgia Military College Aug. 31.

Lewis, who enters his 21st year at the helm of football program, started growing a beard during the summer.

“I just got this a little bit to give the guys something to play with,” Lewis said. “I told ’em I wasn’t going to shave until we won a game, and I hope it’s on Aug. 31st.”

The Bulldogs went 0-10 in 2011, allowing 432 points while scoring just 40. The team switched regions, going from AAA to AA, which might be just what it needed.

“We’ve got four games against teams with numbers like ours,” said Lewis, whose squad numbers about 50.

The team has a quarterback competition going, but whoever takes the reins as starter will have experience. Trey Price entered 2011 as the starter, but was injured in the preseason and lost for the year. He returns and is battling Mason McDaniel, who helmed the offense last year.

At running back, speedster Devin Frails will receive the majority of touches.

Paving the way will be an offensive line that averaged 165 pounds in 2011, but enters the year averaging over 200 pounds. Senior Tyler Beard will be a leader on the line, showing the way for players like Cameron Brown, who was shifted from fullback to tackle.

Frails was happy to see the added bulk up front.

“I feel like it will give the quarterbacks time and let the triple option offense work out, so we can get our yards, score touchdowns and win games,” he said.

Lewis says the team has added depth, which should help them defensively.

“I believe we’re going to be able to play more people than we did last year,” he said.

Frails has just one major goal for the year.

“I just want to win games and prove that the 0-10 season was in the past and we’re better than that.”
