Not many high schoolers can say that they have been named to an All-Madden Team. Lakeside senior JaVeon Brigham can.
Brigham was named to the 2012 IMG All-Madden Team after participating in the IMG Academy’s invitation-only All-Madden Mini-Camp in Bradenton, Fla., July 27-29.
IMG Academy trains all levels of athletes in no less than seven sports and has a variety of football camps throughout the year. During his three days there, Brigham and other players from around the world participated in drills, classroom
sessions, strength training and scrimmages.
“Ultimately, the athletes named to the 2012 IMG All-Madden Team were chosen for their ability to apply what they were taught on the field, their work ethic and their leadership abilities,” Chris Weinke, IMG Academy’s director of football, stated in a press release.
Brigham, who will play linebacker for the Panthers this year, was named to the team as a strong safety. He was one of 27 players to make the team out of 120 players at the camp.
“It was awesome,” Brigham said. “I was selected for strong safety, so it was definitely a great achievement for me.”
In 2011, Brigham registered 80 total tackles for the Panthers with six sacks, four forced fumbles and three recovered. The camp was still an eye-opener.
“It helped me understand the defense a lot more,” Brigham said. “Before I went to that camp, I think I was more single-minded, only worried about linebackers, and now I understand the whole defense.”
But what he took away wasn’t just about football.
“It was an amazing feeling just to interact with different players, especially with people from different states,” Brigham said. “People brought different attitudes and mentalities. Just to connect with them was an awesome feeling.”
Besides the honor, Brigham will receive an official Under Armour All-Madden jersey and a copy of the Madden NFL ’13 video game.
