Evans' Katie Smith (right) goes for the kill while Grovetown's Katie Hagins defends during Thursday night action at Grovetown. The Lady Warriors began the year winning matches against Evans and Cross Creek.

With expectations riding high for Grovetown's senior-laden volleyball team, it was time to see what would happen in game situations Thursday night.
The Warriors opened its season hosting a round-robin with Evans and Cross Creek and came away a perfect 2-0. Cross Creek defeated Evans to break even for the night while the Lady Knights were saddled with two losses.
"I'm excited about this team," said Lady Warriors head coach Amy Slagle. "You're always nervous to see if they're going to show up. I don't really have any complaints."
What hurt the Lady Knights (1-3) all night was their ineffieciency at defending serves. They trailed Grovetown 12-6 in the first game when Kayla Koester broke out all four of her aces as Grovetown scored seven-consecutive points to take a 19-6 lead. The Lady Warriors would win the game 25-9.
The Lady Knights rebounded in game two while Slagle sat some of her starters, winning 25-23, but the Lady Warriors won the third game 25-20 to take the match.
"We're young, we're going to get there," said Lady Knights head coach Lance Schuckers. "We couldn't serve receive and that was our downfall all night long."
In the second match of the night, Cross Creek beat Evans 25-16 in game one, lost 25-19 in game two and came back to to take game three and the match, 25-19.
"We played real hard, I was happy with the way we played both matches," said Cross Creek head coach Scott Hawkins. "I was happy with the win over Evans."
The Lady Warriors proved to be too much for Cross Creek from the get-go. winning 25-20, 25-11.
Grovetown senior Taralyn Gillham was pleased with the way the team began the season.
"It feels so great, it's the first year we've ever beat Evans," said Gillham, who recorded eight aces against the Lady Knights. "I'm glad that it's our senior year and we're pulling together and killing it."
