Local athletes do well at Games

Columbia County Special Olympians competed in the Summer Special Olympics Games at Emory University May 18-20. The 15 athletes represented Evans Middle School, Evans High School, Greenbrier Middle School, Greenbrier High School, Lakeside High School and one homeschooled.

Events included running, swimming, soccer and tennis.

The home-schooled athlete was Nathan Lechner, competing in the 25-meter freestyle (silver medal) and 25 backstroke (sixth).

From Evans Middle School: Jalen Abney, 100-meter dash (gold medal), 200 (silver medal); Niklaus Drury, 100 (silver medal), 200 (silver medal); Dolton Hickenbottom, 100 (gold medal), 200 (fourth); Brandon Reynolds, 200 (gold medal), 100 (bronze medal); Antonio Rodriguez, 200 (gold medal), 100 (fifth); Wil Sanders, 25-meter freestyle (5th), 50 freestyle (fifth).

From Evans High School: Jon Lambert, 25-meter backstroke (4th), 50 freestyle (fourth); Jonathan Cooper, 25 freestyle (bronze medal), 50 freestyle (bronze medal); Gabby Donnelly, tennis skills (silver medal).

From Greenbrier Middle School: Sarah Huston, 25-meter freestyle (bronze medal), 50 freestyle (bronze medal); Gabrielle Paczynski, soccer skills (fourth).

From Greenbrier High School: Claudia Barreto, tennis skills (silver medal); Iesha Worthen, 200-meter dash (bronze medal), 100 (silver medal).

From Lakeside High School was Tameka Jenkins, who won a bronze medal in tennis skills.
