The track season came to an end Saturday at the Georgia High School Boys State Track Meet in Jefferson, Ga.
Columbia County teams from Class AAAA competed at the meet and turned in good performances.
Leading the way were Greenbrier’s Brandon Coombs and Lakeside’s Sid Vaughn, both of whom won state titles.
Coombs took first in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:52.85, while Vaughn was victorious in the 3,200-meter run (9:20.06).
Also in the 3,200 was Lakeside’s Chase Fowers, who finished seventh (9:44.75). In the 1,600-meter run, Coombs (4:19.55) and Vaughn (4:19.73) finished second and third, respectively, with Greenbrier’s Christopher Wilder (4:39.30) coming in at 13.
Greenbrier’s 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams just failed to qualify for the finals, finishing ninth in the preliminaries in both races.
Myles McDavid made his mark in field events. The Evans senior finished third in the triple jump (46-08.5) and placed fifth in the long jump (22-08.5).
Greenbrier’s Spencer Bongiovi was 14th in the pole vault (10-06) and Lakeside’s Sam Graham took 12th in the shot put
In the Georgia Independent School Association Class AAA final, Augusta Prep saw its hopes for a state title dashed when Westminster scored the only goal of the game with 10 minutes left in the contest. The Lady Cavaliers finished the season with a 16-1-1 record.
The Greenbrier girls tennis squad went into the Class AAAA semifinals with a 15-0 record and dreams of a state title after advancing to the semifinals the previous three years. Their semifinal with defending champ Marist was delayed more than two hours because of rain.
Once on the court, Marist ended the Lady Wolfpack’s season, beating Greenbrier 3-0, although Greenbrier was leading the other two matches at the time play was halted.
