State baseball playoffs start Friday

Posted: May 2, 2012 - 12:05am

When the Class AAAA and Class AAA state baseball playoffs get under way Friday, attention will be split across Columbia County.

The Greenbrier Wolfpack (22-2) and the Evans Knights (14-10) battled for the Region 2-AAAA championship last week. The Wolfpack won 4-2.

But with the one-two finish in the region, both squads earned home games in the Class AAAA first round.

Greenbrier, ranked No. 1 in the latest AAAA baseball coaches poll, is assured of home-field advantage at least through the first two rounds, while Evans could have to hit the road beginning in the second round.

“Being at home is a big plus; not having to travel,” said Knights head coach Ricky Beale.

After a third-place finish in the Region 3-AAA playoffs, the Harlem Bulldogs (18-7) will travel to Covington, Ga., to play Eastside High School on Friday in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
