Thursday’s golf tri-match between Augusta Christian, Augusta Prep and Westminster seemed more like a friendly rivalry than an intense competition.

Augusta Prep had faced both schools twice before and entered the match with a 9-0-1 overall record. Augusta Christian came away with the sweep, however.

The Lions (11-5) shot a low team score of 165, followed by Westminster at 168 with Augusta Prep at 170.

The teams squared off at West Lake Country Club, playing the front nine, a par 36.

The whole experience was a good one for the Lions.

“The (state playoffs) are in April and we have time to get ready,” Lions head coach Terry Rutherford said. “A course like this is great. It helps us improve.

“It’s good to go against teams like Augusta Prep and Westminster.”

The teams were divided into five groups of three. Joey Lawrence and Caleb Jones, the No. 1 players from Augusta Prep and Augusta Christian, respectively, shot 39s, besting Westminster’s Rodney Wendt by one shot. Westminster eighth-grader Evan Downs would shoot the low round for the day, posting 38.

The trio were close all day, especially on the last four holes.

Jones shot par on the sixth, winning the hole. Lawrence won the seventh by a shot. The three all shot par on eight before Wendt took the par-5 ninth with a birdie.

“I only missed one green, but I didn’t putt well,” said Jones.

For the freshman Lawrence, who also said he didn’t play well, it was a different matter.

“I got a new driver and I’m not used to it,” said Lawrence.

Correction - Match Play not Stroke Play

This event was actually a "three-way" match play. Westminster won the match. Final results:

Westminster 5 1/2 points
Augusta Christian 4 1/2 points
Augusta Prep 2 1/2 points

Strokes were recorded only to encourage golfers to finish all nine holes.
