A night after facing Region 2-AAAA rival Greenbrier High, the Evans Lady Knights soccer team proved it had more than enough left in the tank.
Shaking off the 2-0 loss to the Lady Wolfpack, Evans came out in front of the home crowd and controlled the flow of the game from start to finish, beating North Augusta 2-0.
“It looked like we had some tired legs in the first half,” said Evans girls coach Kevin Musick. “We were more intense in the second half.”
Caroline Edmunds and Brittany Huggins combined to have a hand in both goals for the Lady Knights (4-1-1, 1-1).
Edmunds sent a pass deep down the middle to Huggins, who beat two defenders, forcing Lady Jackets goalie Joy Price to make a diving save that tipped the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, North Augusta (1-2-1) couldn’t clear the ball and Jessica Galvin was able to jam it home through traffic.
Jennifer Deppen led the Lady Knights defense and took charge, thwarting potential threats.
“She’s our leader, and a captain, and she sets the tone,” Musick said.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Jackets started to apply pressure on the left side of Evans’ defense. Taylor Hurst and Tori Roberts were working the give-and-go well, utilizing Hurst’s speed down the sideline. Hurst put two shots on goal in the first four minutes of the second half, but goalie Ashley Fischer handled them cleanly.
An Evans corner kick paid dividends again. Edmunds kicked it from the left corner toward the back post where Huggins was waiting to head the ball past Price for the 2-0 lead.
Price finished with 10 saves for the Lady Jackets.
Since recording her third shot of the half at 32:27, the Lady Jackets’ Hurst was taken out of the mix by the Lady Knights stingy defense and she would not make any more noise the rest of the way.
