I like to call this time of the year Fantastic February.
Can we trademark that?
Usually I’m experiencing a sports hangover of sorts after the Super Bowl and the end of football, and waiting for March Madness. But this year there’s no time for that.
First, region basketball tournaments start in earnest Monday. I’ve had the opportunity to see just three doubleheaders this year, and on the boys side they’ve all come down to either the final minutes or seconds. I haven’t seen any of the other teams in Region 2-AAAA, but I would think that no matter the seed or final record, Evans and Lakeside have the ability to go deep in the tournament.
Second, when Major League Baseball teams open their training camps for pitchers and catchers next week, it still means there’s basically a month and a half until the season starts.
That’s not the case here in Columbia County, where Evans faces Harlem and Grovetown takes on Washington-Wilkes to start the baseball season Feb. 20.
Baseball will be the fourth spring sport to officially get under way, following soccer and golf and a lacrosse scrimmage between Greenbrier and Lakeside. Counting the state tournament, high school baseball season lasts into May, and I have my fingers crossed the Baltimore Orioles haven’t been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by then.
Like I said, I’ll be waiting for March Madness to start and then the Masters Tournament, but I’m just as excited for Fantastic February.
See, it’s a thing.
