On Senior Night in Evans, both the boys and girls basketball teams fell short.

The Evans boys faced a tall task going against an Effingham County squad that entered with a 20-1 overall record, 8-0 in the Region 2-AAAA, having beat the Knights by 43 points in their previous meeting.

The Knights (14-10, 6-3) missed some opportunities late and scored just five fourth-period points, losing 53-42.

“We had some turnovers at the wrong time and missed some layups that could have kept us in the game,” said Knights head coach Kevin Kenny of the final period.

Damion Foreman led the Knights with a game-high 17 points while Tyler Moore chipped in with 12.

The teams traded body shots throughout the contest. The Knights used a 15-2 run early to take a 19-9 lead, but the Rebels battled back to close within 24-23 at the half.

At the end of the third period, 6-foot-7 center Jakeenan Gant dunked twice to give the Rebels a 39-36 lead and they carried the momentum into the fourth. The Knights would get no closer than 41-39.

The Evans girls led up to the end of the third quarter when the Lady Rebels tied the score at 26. Effingham scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and never looked back, winning 36-32.

The Lady Knights (12-12, 3-6) limited the the Lady Rebels to just one shot each trip in the early stages, but Effingham (12-9, 5-4) upped the pressure in the second half with turnovers taking its toll on the Evans.

Jakayvea Akins led the Lady Rebels, scoring all her 10 points in the second half.

Jasmine Stone paced the Lady Knights with a game-high 11 points.
