Evans High’s Myles McDavid hit a basketball milestone Tuesday while leading his team to a 46-45 win against Lakeside.
Late in the first quarter, McDavid dropped his second 3-pointer to surpass 1,000 points for his high school career.
“I didn’t know how many points I needed,” said McDavid. “Really I’m going for the wins, but it feels good to get the 1,000. Either way it’s a great accomplishment.”
McDavid lead the scoring for Evans with 18 points to secure a Knights’ win and possibly a No. 2 seed and first round bye in the Region 2-AAAA playoffs.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, Evans was tied with Statesboro with a 5-2 region record with Effingham County leading the way.
The matchup with Lakeside (10-13, 1-7) was far from a sure thing early on. At the half, the Panthers led Evans (14-9, 6-2) 28-22 with Lakeside’s Chris Hall contributing 10 points.
But Hall got into early foul trouble and rode the bench for much of the third period. When he returned in the fourth, he contributed a single layup before fouling out.
That fifth foul came against McDavid, after the second steal he took from Hall inside of 30 seconds.
From the free-throw line after the foul, McDavid went two-for-two to put Evans within a point of Lakeside with 45 seconds remaining in the game.
Then Matt Epps also hit both shots from the foul line to give Evans a short-lived lead before Lakeside’s Sam Powell hit a free-throw to tie the game at 45 with just 18 seconds left on the clock.
But Epps again hit a clutch foul shot with 1.2 seconds left to cap the win for the Knights.
The Lady Knights had an easier time with their 56-48 victory over Lakeside, at least in the second half.
The Lady Panthers (9-12, 3-5) led by two at the end of the first period, but Evans caught up in the second to enter the half tied at 23 all. Lakeside’s five points in the second quarter all came from the foul line.
Evans (11-12, 3-5) pulled ahead in the third, with Allysha McFarland and Jasmine Stone nailing two 3-pointers each and Kiki Battle adding another to build up an 11-point lead.
Lakeside kept pace with Evans in the fourth, but couldn’t catch up.
McFarland led the scoring with 17 points, including 15 from 3-point range.
