While most other schools will be closed Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Evans High will open up its gym for an inaugural basketball event.
The MLK Hoops Classic will feature six girls and four boys teams, from private and public schools, including Evans and Laney.
Event organizer and Evans boys basketball coach Kevin Kenny said he has wanted to play host to such an event that would attract some of the top high school basketball programs in the region.
“An event like this has been held on MLK Day for years in Atlanta, so we decided to try it and see how it goes,” Kenny said in an e-mail.
The classic starts at noon with the Arlington Christian girls taking on Heathwood Hall.
Arlington Christian has won four consecutive girls basketball titles in the Georgia Independent School Association and currently is in the midst of a 100-game regular season win streak.
Heathwood Hall, Kenny said, boasts the second-ranked junior player in the country.
At 1:30 p.m., the Lady Knights will take on Morgan County, which was a state playoffs quarterfinalist last season.
Atlanta area Jonesboro High will play the Laney girls at 3 p.m.
The Jonesboro boys will play Evans (10-5 overall record before Friday and were 2-0 in Region 2-AAAA) at 5 p.m.
The final game between the Laney High boys and Morgan County starts at 6:30 p.m.
