The track season came to an end Saturday at the Georgia High School Boys State Track Meet in Jefferson, Ga.

Columbia County teams from Class AAAA competed at the meet and turned in good performances.

Leading the way were Greenbrier’s Brandon Coombs and Lakeside’s Sid Vaughn, both of whom won state titles.

Coombs took first in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:52.85, while Vaughn was victorious in the 3,200-meter run (9:20.06).

With a pair of signings at Augusta Christian, two Lions are now set to become Gladiators.

William Wolf and Justice Dennis made official their decision to attend Orangeburg-Calhoun Prep Academy in Orangeburg, S.C., Thursday.

The pair follow teammate Adonis Roberson, who signed with the junior college in February, and both said they hope to later transfer to Clemson.

For Wolf, going there with teammates will be a good way to make the transition to college easier.

Last month, Evans senior Kelsey Burack got to fulfill a dream when she signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Johnson & Wales University.

“I am impressed with Kelsey’s work ethic and obvious desire to join and help our program,” said coach Callie Phillips. “Her determination will be an asset to our team.”

Burack has played volleyball for six years, beginning in middle school with school and travel teams, and is a utility player who can set, pass, and serve well.

With his competitive spirit, Augusta Christian School’s Grant Newman is showing he can hurdle obstacles that get in his way.

Heading into the South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA state track meet, Newman was battling strep throat and wasn’t at his best.

“The night before I had broken my fever, but I got no sleep,” said Newman. “It was a rough night.”

Add to the mix that the Lions don’t have a track and have to train on the school’s football field.
