Another year and another case of a high school team in trouble for illegal activity.

In a case of deja’ vu, it was exactly one year ago that The News-Times published a story about four Lakeside baseball players being expelled for drinking on the bus on the way back from a game.

That pales in comparison to 18 players from the Greenbrier boys soccer team suspended for 10 days, pending a hearing, for smoking “spice” and drinking in hotel rooms at Jekyll Island while on a school-sponsored team trip.

A man called deputies Thursday stating someone hacked his cell phone and changed his outgoing message to one filled with racial slurs and profanity.

Former Columbia County commission candidate Lee Benedict won’t be prosecuted locally for posting a photo of his ballot on Facebook.

District Attorney Ashley Wright said Friday that her office will not pursue charges against Benedict.

“We’ve passed it on to the Secretary of State’s office,” Wright said.

Any action taken in connection to the incident will be by the Secretary of State’s office, she said.

The Columbia County commission is in favor of seeing the area’s combined universities grow, but not GRU.

The Commission passed a resolution its Tuesday meeting requesting that the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia reconsider the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences University. The Board of Regents recently voted to name the school Georgia Regents University. The decision has been met with strong opposition.
