Pupils participate in See You at the Pole

A large group of pupils gathered around Merriwether Middle School’s flag pole before school started Sept. 26 to worship and pray.

The annual See You at the Pole event is a student-organized and student-led prayer rally hosted at schools around the country.

Merriwether’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes organized the morning activities.

“It’s a chance for everybody to come together and learn about Jesus,” said 12-year-old Daniel Hutto.

Being able to share their faith with peers is one of the things pupils enjoy about being a part of a club like FCA, members said.

“It’s fun because you’re with your friends and can talk about the Lord,” said 13-year-old Keeley Marchant.

“It’s like a family atmosphere,” added Daniel.

Club members read scriptures before Ray Henderson, youth pastor at Lakeside Baptist Church, spoke to the crowd and encouraged them to “be the crowd” by having a relationship with God.

A pupil then concluded the activity by leading a prayer.

Henderson has participated in other See You at the Pole events in the past, but the one held at Merriwether was the largest one he’s seen, he said, adding that he enjoys seeing youth take an active role in their faith and leading activities such as See You at the Pole.

“It gives them a chance to take initiative and stand up for what they believe in and express their faith,” he said.
