School Notes

• The Aiken County school district’s 2012-13 budget process has begun, and suggestions and comments are welcome. Visit acps.schoolfusion.us for more information and to submit input. There will be a public input meeting June 5. Public hearings for the budget and millage are scheduled for June 12, and the budget will be adopted June 26.

• Volunteers are needed for the Area 15 Special Olympics Spring Games from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at Midland Valley High School. Volunteers will provide one-on-one help with Special Olympics participants. Those interested should e-mail volunteerarea15@bellsouth.net and include the following information: your name, name of the group volunteering, number of volunteers attending, contact information and a list of all volunteer names. Organizers will be in touch with volunteers about training, expectations and directions.

• Savannah River Remediation has a math and science grant open for local public elementary schools. The Students, Teachers Achieving Results grant is open to Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Edgefield and Orangeburg counties in South Carolina, and Columbia and Richmond counties in Georgia. Teachers interested in applying should contact their principal. Deadline is
April 12.

• North Augusta High School classes of 1970 to 1979 will have a reunion from 3 p.m. to midnight Nov. 10 at The Hippodrome. Bobby's Bar-B-Q will cater the event, and music will be by The Unmentionables. Cost is $50 per person or $85 per couple through July 1. After July 1, cost is $65 per person or $100 per couple. Checks should be made payable to NASH Class Reunion and mailed to Teresa Bishop Lee, 568 Ansley Way, Evans, GA 30809. Please include on the check the year of graduation and your full name. Payments can also be made through PayPal at NASH70sreunion.com. • The Aiken County school district office will accept applications for Expanded School Choice through March 31 for the 2012-13 school year. Applications are available at acps.schoolfusion.us and can be faxed to (803) 641-2636, or taken or mailed to the district office at 1000 Brookhaven Drive, Aiken, SC 29803. Parents are reminded that there are a limited number of openings and applications will be accepted by date and time order. Decisions on school choices will be made after spring break.

• Items not claimed by March 30 from lost-and-found will be donated to a local charity.

• The following PTO positions are open for the 2012-13 year: vice president, treasurer and volunteer coordinator. For information, e-mail belvederepto25@yahoo.com.

• Saturday School will be held Saturday; April 14 and 21; and May 5, 12, 19 and 26. One day of Saturday School lets students make up one absence. Those
who want to attend must sign up with Ms. Mayson in the front office by the Friday before the Saturday School date they wish to attend. Students are required to arrive by 8 a.m. for Saturday School and must pay $10 to attend.

• Only about 100 yearbooks are left. Yearbooks are $75 each. Payment can be given to Ms. Harris or visit www.jostensyearbooks.com.

• The following pupils have become members of the Double H Reading Club: Pressley Barbee, Emma Carter, Jordan Turner, Trinity Avery, Matthew Baxley, Garrett Hunt, Kyle Wales, Janae Elliott, Noah Lindler, Harley Ward, Sophia McCall, Ashlyn Gambrell, Michael Addie, Maya Browning, Cayla Cunningham, Angel Morales, Blake McLemore, Breanna Buff, Abby Cockrell, Chance Price, Brooks Robinson, Aubrey Smith, Cami Smith and Lanie Coronel.

• Friday is a teacher workday. There will be no school for pupils.

• The PTO will have a mother-son bowling event Friday at Northside Lanes. The cost is $7 per person and includes two slices of pizza, a 16-ounce drink, shoe rental, one game of bowling and one picture. A note will be sent home today to those who submitted reservation forms with your assigned bowling time. Grandmothers and aunts are welcome to participate.

• Palmetto Assessment of State Standards writing test will be administered to eighth-grade pupils today.

• The fourth nine weeks begins Thursday.

• The Band Concert Festival will be Tuesday.

• School is out for a teacher in-service day Friday.

• The Hollywood Stars Fashion Show will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Applications to be in the show are due today.

• The following made the book club: 100 books: Stanley Hill, Maya Thomas and Shane Wood; 200 books: Aden Jackson; 500 books: Tamia Jenkins; and 1,200 books: Colby Hawes.

• Principal's Writing Board winners are: Maya Thomas, Gabriel Allison, Holly Hargrove, Jermaine Williams, Audrey Robertson and Brook Couture.

• Friday is a teacher workday; pupils will not come to school.

• The following were named Junior Marshals: Daniel Pippen, Bailie Sparks, Alyssa Dyches, Joey Baldwin, Arielle Houston, Kristy Heath, Mary Beth Cooper, Adam Parler, Ramsey Whitley, Jordan Gamble, Alison Cercy, Bryce Cato, Jonathan Mills, Ricky Baldwin, Glenn Barnes, Eric Collins, Rachel Hopkins, Russell Scaggs, Ashton Norris and Hannah Reese.

Samantha Farmer received the National Beta Club Scholarship for $1,000.

Kristen Barbour and Marquis Martin were named 2011-12 African American Scholars at Augusta State University.

• The following placed at the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council Student Art Show: Caroline Kalayjian, Best in Show; Matthew Berry, first place; Kara Mitton, second place; Carrie Fulghum, third place; Bronwyn Bigger, honorable mention, Chelsea Youell, honorable mention; and Lauren Johnson, honorable mention.

• The following pupils are winners of the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council Art Show: Joe Burgess, third place; Megan Zeaser, honorable mention; and Taylor Grimes, honorable mention.

• The third nine weeks ends Tuesday.

• The PASS writing test will be given today.

• There will be a leadership meeting at 3:45 p.m. today.

• Friday is a teacher workday. No classes for pupils.
