I ran into my old friend Larry Rogers in Winn-Dixie recently where he told me about an incident at the checkout.
A friendly cashier wished a customer a merry Christmas, Rogers said, whereupon the customer pointedly replied, “Happy holidays.”
My first response is what a jerk. When people say things we don’t agree with, we just give them a “Bless your heart and your benighted soul,” smile and move on. Why did this customer think he had to correct “Merry Christmas” with “Happy holidays?”
