A few years ago, our family moved temporarily from one house to another in the same neighborhood. We’d sold our home and were living in a rental while our new home was under construction.

Naturally, one of the issues of moving from one place to another is getting the mail properly routed. That happens all the time, of course; it’s not a big deal.

Except, in this case, we had two things working against us.

Debates this past week about how past actions will determine Columbia County’s future were front and center, and very loud.

But within the past couple of weeks, our community quietly has lost several people who did much to make Columbia County the fine place that it is.

• Lt. Gen. Robert Gray, memorialized this past week, died recently in a car crash. Retired as the commanding general of Fort Gordon, in recent years Gray was chairman of the Columbia County Democratic Party.

When riled-up voters decide they’re mad enough at an elected official – say, a county commissioner – to believe he should be booted from office rather than waiting until the next election, they often demand a recall.

Some people have been muttering the word “recall” since the commissioners’ Magnolia Trace debacle. It’s easy to demand, especially when you don’t have a clue about how it’s done or any actual intention of doing it.

I read Barry Paschal’s column Sunday in The News-Times, “Snob appeal in opposition,” and I am highly offended.

Just because someone lives in a low-income neighborhood does not mean they are ignorant, drug addicts or “scary people.”

I moved to Columbia County six years ago from Richmond County. There is a lot more crime in Richmond County, but I’ve never been so offended, mistreated, bullied, or pressured about drugs until I moved here.
