A triumphant story of heroism played out early Saturday on Interstate 20 near Grovetown.

It also was a story of needless risk.

As noted in The Augusta Chronicle, Joseph Banks was freed from his burning vehicle when Columbia County deputies and a Georgia state trooper cut him loose from his seatbelt and pulled him to safety.

Other motorists watched helplessly until the emergency responders arrived, with Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue personnel dousing the flames as the other workers rescued Banks.

My surgeries have become laughable. Four in two years is a lot. I’ve recently had what, hopefully, will be the last one on my neck. Apparently, my spine is a train wreck.

I went to my neurosurgeon and he said it was OK to take off the neck brace except when driving. After having it off for a few hours, I started feeling as though my head was going to fall off. Actually, it felt like I was a bobble-head doll. It was as if somebody could pass by me, give my head a little push and it would start bobbing up and down.

Our community got an unexpected bit of notoriety this past week from a national publication.

A story in USA Today, “High schools cracking down on end-of-the-year pranks,” made note of the vandalism of Greenbrier High School by four seniors and a younger student as one of the more damaging “pranks” to hit schools around the country.
