Harlem citizens were greeted in the July newsletter with a notice that city officials violated a federal drinking water requirement by failing to monitor and test for total coliform in December of 2011.

The letter from the city reads:

When it comes to small towns, Ailey is about as small as they come.

The Montgomery County community is situated a little north of Uvalda and a few miles west of Vidalia in the heart of southeast Georgia’s onion country. Its population was counted at 432 in the last census.

Even with its small size, Ailey was still big enough to have its own hometown bank for more than 85 years: Montgomery Bank & Trust.

Re Barry Paschal’s June 27 column, “Put an end to excess speed”:

I try not to speed, and usually do not, but I find myself hurrying at times. I spend four to five hours per day, five days per week, almost every week, driving on Columbia County roads. I work for a Columbia County home builder. I travel from Grovetown to subdivisions near Washington Road and William Few Parkway, to Evans, north to the river, to Bobby Jones Expressway.

On July 31, or earlier with advanced voting, we will have the opportunity to vote for or against transportation for our region. Not only will Columbia County citizens have the opportunity to vote on the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST, but so will Richmond, McDuffie, Oglethorpe, Fulton and all 159 counties in the state of Georgia.
